Course Description

BSN 433 Quality and Safety in Nursing Safety explores theories, frameworks, competencies, and strategies in nursing practice to improve healthcare quality and patient safety. In this course, students gain knowledge about quality and safety in nursing as derived from multiple knowledge disciplines. This course also covers the drivers and barriers to nursing quality and safety, quality improvement models and initiatives, patient鈥恈entered care, teamwork and collaboration, evidence鈥恇ased practice, and informatics. Students also examine the scholarly and applied work of researchers who develop and foster critical thinking about improving health care. (Formerly BSN 433: Quality Improvement in Nursing Care)聽

Learning Outcomes:

  • Understand the drivers of and barriers to safety and quality in nursing and their policy implications.
  • Learn and discuss the theories underpinning health care quality and patient safety in nursing.
  • Analyze the Quality and Safety Education for Nurses Project to understand quality and safety competencies in nursing.
  • Learn and discuss the strategies for building a culture of quality and safety.
